Conflicting perspectives are an inevitable part of human existence as they arise from the complex interplay of individual experience, social and cultural background and influences. Representations of these discrepancies are fundamentally constructed through acts of deliberate selection and emphasis, enabling composers to manipulate audienceââ¬â¢s conscious perceptions of truth and reality. David Gutersonââ¬â¢s Snow Falling on Cedars portrays the necessity of accepting the inexorable existence of nature, fate and prejudices within society. Likewise Alissa Tiââ¬â¢s modern painting with analytical article Perfect Harmony integrates art, music and literature to represent humansââ¬â¢ essentiality in moving on from the difficulties in life. Together, conflicting perspectives represented through art parallels the subjectivity of life and shows that there is no conventional definition for ââ¬Å"the truthâ⬠as it depends solely within each individual. Guterson depicts conflicting perspectives on humanityââ¬â¢s response to the ungraspable forces of nature and fate by selectively contrasting Western and Eastern philosophies through Ishmael and Hatsueââ¬â¢s past and values. Ishmael figuratively views life as ââ¬Å"one whole oceanâ⬠, floating between his inability to ââ¬Å"let goâ⬠his past ââ¬Å"war veteranâ⬠and ââ¬Å"unconditionedâ⬠love memories for Hatsue symbolised in his unwillingness to ââ¬Å"denervateâ⬠his ââ¬Å"amputated armâ⬠to its ââ¬Å"stumpâ⬠. In juxtaposition, Hatsue represents an Eastern perspective considering life and the relationship with Ishmael as an ââ¬Å"ocean [that] wonââ¬â¢t mixâ⬠, separated by racial prejudices from her unavoidable traditional values. Guterson affirms Hatsueââ¬â¢s recognition that ââ¬Å"thereââ¬â¢s no point perpetually grasping for somethingâ⬠as she symbolically ââ¬Å"learn to play herâ⬠life ââ¬Å"like an instrumentâ⬠in ââ¬Å"harmonyâ⬠, emphasizing that humans should accept a ââ¬Ëgreater truthââ¬â¢ than individual desires by acknowledging ââ¬Å"death, injustice, hardshipâ⬠, as ââ¬Å"part of lifeâ⬠. Guterson then metaphorically summates humans as ââ¬Å"dust in strong windâ⬠, susceptible to ââ¬Å"fateâ⬠and ââ¬Å"accidentâ⬠to any situation, however ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s all kind of a balancing actâ⬠by moving on the privations of life. Ultimately, Guterson accentuates that while ââ¬Å"fate and accident conspire; human beings must act on reasonâ⬠and choice by figuratively acknowledging ââ¬Å"that accident ruled the universe except the chambers of the human heart. â⬠Similarly, Alissaââ¬â¢s philosophical perspectives is exemplified through both visually and textually that ââ¬Å"Perfect Harmonyâ⬠is gained ââ¬Å"if only we chooseâ⬠to accept the ever existing conflicts and ââ¬Å"forget the unattainableâ⬠. Corresponding to Gutersonââ¬â¢s Hatsue learning to live with acceptance, Alissaââ¬â¢s cyclic cropping of her favoured romanticist ââ¬Å"Chopinâ⬠reflects her recognition of the human cycle; past, present and death. The lively and multi-coloured tone corresponds to ââ¬Å"[her] childhood reluctance to learn a new sonataâ⬠which epitomizes the stubbornness of humanity; being detained from new ideals. The symbolic black tuxedo reflecting life failings, juxtaposed with the vibrant yellow background of hope respectively parallels her analogy of ââ¬Å"life stoppingâ⬠by ââ¬Å"stumbling, hitting the wrong keysâ⬠but by ââ¬Å"continuing [there] is still hopeâ⬠. Alissa further portrays true ââ¬Å"peace and happinessâ⬠induced by moving on from the fragmented ââ¬Å"stumblesâ⬠in life represented by the combination of broken and unbroken note symbols around the artwork. In essence, it is by the repetitive ââ¬Å"next note, next chordâ⬠and the solemn gaze in Chopinââ¬â¢s eyes which positions us to prerequisitely accept failures and uncontrollable forces of life and death by moving on to the ââ¬Å"next stageâ⬠to find ââ¬Å"Perfect Harmonyâ⬠in life. However, Guterson then flaunts the imperfections in life by examining conflicting perspectives on prejudice, discrimination and the resulting injustice within a courtroom; a microcosm of the broader prejudice and intolerance afflicting San Piedro and humanity. Gutersonââ¬â¢s condemnation of such prejudice is epitomized by the unsympathetic depiction and racial innuendos of the prosecutor Alvin Hooks who appeals to the jury to ââ¬Å"look into [Kabuoââ¬â¢s] eyesââ¬â¢, to condemn him as a ââ¬ËJapââ¬â¢ and wreak revenge for wartime injustices, symbolising the bigotry and hatred which can metaphorically blind humanity to truth and justice. Guterson juxtaposes this viewpoint with Nelsââ¬â¢ final summation appealing to the jury to act with integrity by standing up against the ââ¬Ëendless tideââ¬â¢ of racism. The persuasive and dignified tone created by abstract nouns and anaphora through Nelsââ¬â¢ speech declaring ââ¬Å"In Godââ¬â¢s name, and humanityââ¬â¢s nameâ⬠must ââ¬Å"ceaselessly conspire towards injusticeâ⬠position the audience to similarly act in breaking free of ââ¬Å"human frailtyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"irrational fearsâ⬠. Ultimately, Guterson juxtaposes the ââ¬Å"amoral forcesâ⬠of nature having ââ¬Å"the stormâ⬠of ââ¬Å"limits and greynessâ⬠ââ¬Å"beyond our controlâ⬠with ââ¬Å"the outcomes of this trial [which] is notâ⬠to symbolise the central importance in choosing to transcend the ââ¬Å"blind chaosâ⬠of intolerance and disparate perspectives within society. Although truth is often blinded by delusions of exterior prejudices, Alissaââ¬â¢s art then mirrors the subjectivity of the ââ¬Å"real truthâ⬠being different to each individual by disparate perspectives. Similar to Gutersonââ¬â¢s prejudiced trial of Kabuo, Alissaââ¬â¢s double illusion of the piano on Chopinââ¬â¢s tie and tuxedo reflects the uncertainty of every event and situation being seen ââ¬Å"another wayâ⬠from another angle. Additionally, the musical and anaphoric allegory in ââ¬Å"playing the notes a little differentlyâ⬠resonating ââ¬Å"different interpretations, different meaningâ⬠furthermore accentuates that the interpretation of meaning can vary from each individualââ¬â¢s perception. Alissaââ¬â¢s allusion juxtaposing that some ââ¬Å"play musicâ⬠for ââ¬Å"trophies and medalsâ⬠with herself playing to ââ¬Å"create peace in [her] soulâ⬠shows that some hold on materialistic and unattainable views, whilst some come to the ââ¬Å"greater truthâ⬠just like Gutersonââ¬â¢s Ishmael letting go of the ungraspable; unrequited love and fate. The illusional tesselations of doves in Chopinââ¬â¢s hair and the vectors separating each piano key symbolizes that peace and harmony is ââ¬Å"somewhere embedded in the markings of timeâ⬠, whilst the perception of life metaphorically as keys of ââ¬Å"white and blackâ⬠; right or wrong and the real truth is forever subjective from changing perspectives.
